Vacancy Announcement: Temporary Research Officer


The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa based international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant multidisciplinary research.


Our research addresses important development issues and challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization and wellbeing.


Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with policy makers in the region to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions, and improve the quality of life in Africa.


Lived experiences, social determinants and pathways to unsafe abortion in Benin and Kenya is a project conducted by APHRC and Rutgers as part of the “She Makes Her Safe Choice” program.


The research project aims at exploring women and adolescent girls’ experiences towards unintended pregnancies and the way they navigate abortion decision making, in order to better understand the barriers and opportunities to access safe abortion advice, products, and care.


To carry out day to day activities of the project, the team seeks to recruit a Temporary Research Officer with expertise in ethnography, qualitative data analysis and to work within the Population Dynamics, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Unit.


Duties & Responsibilities


1. Participate in coding the qualitative data.


2. Take lead in data management.


3. Participate in qualitative data analysis and scientific writing.


4. Organize writing workshops and dissemination/validation meetings with the key stakeholders.


5. Participate in dissemination of research findings.


6. Take lead in preparing progress reports.


7. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.


Desirable


1. Experience working in sexual and reproductive health research.


2. Experience in coding and qualitative data analysis.


3. Experience in community and stakeholder engagement.


Qualifications and Experience


1. Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology, Sociology or related disciplines.


2. At least two years’ experience preferably in a research setting.


3. Good computer literacy and knowledge of qualitative software such as NVivo, Dedoose or ATLAS.ti.


4. Excellent oral and written communication in English and Swahili.


5. Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks and meet tight deadlines.


6. Publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
