Job title: Gender Coordinator


Grade: Hay Band 5 – 6


Reporting to: Global Monitoring and Evaluation Manager


Direct reports: None


Key peer group: Project managers, PDG, RDs, GDs


Location: Nairobi, Kenya


Purpose of the role: The gender coordinator is expected to lead the efforts to embed gender firmly across CABI. S/he will support gender mainstreaming by working with science staff to embed gender in proposals, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting, and leading the development of gender related proposals. S/he will be required to report on progress on gender mainstreaming efforts.


The gender coordinator will be expected to stay abreast of current developments in the gender field, develop linkages and partnerships with external expertise and provide training and seminars to support staff in gender skills.


Key accountabilities:



  • Develop a gender action plan to outline actions to mainstream gender in CABI; review and update the action plan on an annual basis

  • Review and provide gender advice on project development, implementation and reporting across the organisation, with a particular focus on women’s empowerment.

  • Lead /contribute to projects where gender is a lead component of the work

  • Develop and maintain a gender knowledge base and good practice in relevant technical areas for dissemination to staff for professional development

  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of latest developments in fields of gender, women’s empowerment and youth engagement in agriculture and the environment

  • Carry out staff training and capacity building, as required, in gender and women’s empowerment

  • Refine, develop and share with other staff, gender analysis and support tools to use during project development and implementation

  • Represent CABI and promote our experience in gendered work through publications and conference attendance

  • Any other duties as required


CANDIDATE PROFILE


Knowledge & Skills



  • Excellent understanding of gender issues in agriculture and the environment across a variety of cultures and contexts

  • Good ability to identify, obtain and analyse information from a variety of sources


KNOWLEDGE FOR LIFE



  • Good ability to facilitate learning and professional development in others

  • Good organisational and research skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent excel and budget preparation skills


Education & Qualifications



  • MSc or equivalent in social sciences, gender, international development, rural sociology, anthropology

  • 5 years work experience in related fields


Experience



  • Experience in integrating gender into projects and programme design and implementation, monitoring and reporting

  • Experience in project development

  • Experience in design and use of gender tools and toolkits

  • Knowledge and experience of implementation of gender analyses and assessments

  • Knowledge and experience of implementation of women’s economic empowerment tools and research
