The Women’s Health Project, established in 1993, is a collaborative effort of the University of Nairobi (UoN), the University of Washington (UW), the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Mombasa County and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), and the US President’s Emergency Program for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
Objectives
- To provide clinical care to participants.
- To provide high quality care to at-risk and HIV-positive women participating in the high-risk women’s cohort (Mombasa Cohort).
- To conduct innovative prevention and treatment research that will contribute substantially to local as well as global knowledge and implementation of effective interventions.
Job Summary: The clinical officer will work under the supervision of the Clinic Section Head to ensure smooth running of the research site.
Essential Job Functions
- Work with the Research Physician on the following tasks:
- Screening and enrolment of eligible patients.
- Collect medical history and perform physical examinations of participants.
- Diagnose and treat study participants.
- Prescription of ARVs and identification of adverse events related to ART.
- Collect specimens and confirm correct labeling of the specimens.
- Avail laboratory results to study participants and treat them accordingly.
- Countercheck specimens and supervise their transportation to the laboratory as well as supervise accurate entry of laboratory results in to the study record books.
- Coordinate journal clubs with collaborating institutions and also coordinate teaching conferences.
- Maintain consents and consent audits for ongoing projects.
- Cover for emergency calls from study participants, especially those on ART.
- Conducting face-to-face questionnaires with research participants.
- Daily Continuous Quality Improvement.
- Weekly laboratory review and results entry.
- Data Entry as needed.
- Perform any additional tasks as assigned by the clinic section head/principal investigator.
Qualifications / Skills / Experience
- Diploma in Clinical medicine and Surgery.
- Registered by the Kenya Clinical Officers Council with valid practicing license
- At least 2 years’ clinical experience.
- Experience in clinical trials and the field of HIV/AIDS including counseling, administration of antiretroviral therapy and data collection is an advantage.
- Computer literacy skills with MS Office software. Statistical software skills e.g. SPSS or Stata will be an advantage.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Fluent in English and Kiswahili.
- Focus and attention to detail.
