At PayGo Energy (PayGo), our mission is to support the growth of LPG in emerging markets through digital innovation.


Our journey started back in 2015. Our hypothesis was that, through pay-as-you-go technology, we could unlock access to clean cooking for the three billion households that still use dirty fuels such as charcoal and kerosene. What started as a quest to increase access to clean cooking led to a much broader challenge: how do we leverage technology to help the industry unlock new markets, and better serve existing ones?


Fast forward to 2020 and we believe we’ve cracked it. The PayGo platform creates a fully digital supply chain, making it easy to buy and sell gas where there is no piped infrastructure. Our Cylinder Smart Meter (CSM) provides the missing connection into the customer’s home, enabling retailers to provide a far superior cooking experience.


2020 is going to be a huge year for the PayGo team. We’ve spent the last few years with our heads in the sand, working hard to develop a platform and CSM that we’re proud of, and we believe we will transform the industry. We’re now ready to commercialize. This means we’ll be growing our Kenyan operations significantly, and exploring new markets to take our products to. It also means that we need to build our external profile as the leading technology company in the LPG industry. And that’s where you come in.


About you



  • First and foremost, you will have an impeccable eye for design and detail. You will cultivate the image that PayGo portrays to the world – and this image must be aligned to who we are, what we’re aiming to achieve and whom we’re trying to influence.

  • You will report to the Head of Corporate Development and work across the business to develop bold, creative and consistent communication materials aligned to our cultural identity and strategic objectives. You will develop a Communications Strategy including a succinct business narrative, and a multi-channel strategy for delivery. You will also work with the CEO to produce regular internal communications that are clear and structured, as we embark on a period of transformational change.  You will set the tone for our internal and external brand and share communications best-practices, supporting our team to be effective ambassadors for the PayGo brand. On occasion, you will work with our Business Development function to help develop B2B marketing materials.

  • Things happen quickly at PayGo, and to do great work you need to be an enthusiastic team player who can work cross-functionally and at pace. You must be quick-witted, intellectually curious and comfortable navigating ambiguity. You must be calm under pressure, and capable of managing numerous projects with tight deadlines. You also need a sense of humour, creative flair, and a desire to do things differently.


Your core responsibilities as Communications Associate will be:



  • Communications strategy – develop a multi-channel Communications Strategy that establishes a regular cadence for delivering key messages, and ensures consistency of messaging.

  • Brand strategy – establish guidelines for content generation aligned to the PayGo brand. Our aesthetic should reflect that of a tech company – modern, clean – while retaining plenty of character.

  • Content creation – develop bold, creative, high-quality content (print, photo, video). This includes spending time on the ground with each of our teams, creating digital content that tells our story. It also includes working with content experts on our team to develop and publish regular thought leadership pieces.

  • Ownership of communications channels – own all external communications. This includes maintaining the PayGo website, social media channels and other external communications.

  • Capability building & continuous improvement – provide leadership and coaching to the PayGo team, supporting every team member to become an effective brand ambassador. Bring a critical eye to identify areas where we can get better at telling our story.

  • Business support – support our business units to develop communications content linked to their activities, as required. This includes contributing to the development of B2B marketing materials.


What we’re looking for


Preferred Qualifications & Experience



  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (Communications, Marketing, Business) or equivalent practical experience

  • 5+ years experience in a Communications-related role

  • Experience working in a fast-growing technology company


Required Skills



  • Impeccable eye for design and detail.

  • Ability to independently develop digital content that reflects our design aesthetic and tells our story.

  • Ability to focus and prioritize given a fast-moving set of projects and teams.

  • Experience in developing and executing communications strategies.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Ability to manage diverse personalities and beliefs, and to firmly and diplomatically guide individuals and leaders on the best communications strategy.

  • Ability to ‘connect the dots’ when working across teams, and departments to create cohesive communications strategies.

  • Clear and succinct writing style, with some flair thrown in there. Ability to creatively contribute new, appealing ways to communicate internally.

  • Ability to manage relationships with senior stakeholders.
