Fauna & Flora International (FFI) has been championing wildlife conservation in Kenya in some shape or form since our foundation in 1903. Exactly a century later, we opened an office in Nairobi and established a formal country programme, since when we have been supporting local partners to protect key habitats and species. In particular, we have played a crucial role in establishing a number of wildlife conservancies in northern Kenya that protect wildlife while also supporting sustainable local livelihoods.




Specific Duties:


Driving and delivery



  • Safely drive FFI vehicles, including transportation of FFI staff and any other authorised personnel for official purposes, in full compliance with Kenyan road traffic laws and FFI’s vehicle use policy.

  • Promptly deliver any packages, documents, equipment or goods.

  • Ensure that adequate knowledge of the destination, route and any traffic restrictions at the destination is gathered and communicated to the travelling passengers before departure on any trip.


Vehicle maintenance



  • Ensure cleanliness of the vehicle(s) assigned at all times.

  • Carry out mandatory daily checks of FFI vehicles including among others, fuel oil and coolant levels; transmission and brake fluid; brakes; warning horn; tyre pressure and tread depth; headlights, turn signals, brake and parking lights, battery, windscreen wipers, safety belts, first aid kit and fire extinguisher.

  • Carry out periodic checks and tests including: vehicle insurance, routine vehicle service and statutory inspections to determine vehicle status, maintenance needs and necessary vehicle changes and report to the Finance and Administration Manager, Kenya as soon as possible.

  • Ensure approval and facilitate the repair and maintenance of the assigned vehicle as needed.


Record keeping



  • Maintain a vehicle log at all times for the assigned vehicle indicating date, vehicle mileage and time at start and end of trip, purpose of trip, fund to pay for the trip, and authorisation.

  • Maintain a vehicle maintenance log for the assigned vehicle(s) and update it monthly.

  • Submit a monthly vehicle report which includes vehicle mileage report, vehicle maintenance report and vehicle fuel report.


Safety, Emergencies and incidents



  • Report immediately to the Finance and Administration Manager, Kenya, and the Country Manager, Kenya any incidents, accidents, injury, damage or arrests relating to any passenger, pedestrian or third-party property during any trip.

  • Responsible for checking that all tools, medical kits and any other necessary safety equipment are supplied with the vehicle, and highlighting gaps as necessary.

  • Handle any emergency, to the best of their ability, regarding any incidents resulting to injury or damage.

  • Communicate departure and arrival times at destinations, and any unforeseen problems, to the designated communication point.


Legal compliance



  • Maintain an up to date record, knowledge and understanding of all the traffic laws, rules and regulations of Kenyan roads and adhere to these at all times while on duty.

  • Ensure compliance with national laws including keeping up to date PSV licence and authorizations.

  • Ensure FFI sticker is displayed in line with NTSA (operation of Public Service Vehicles) Regulations, 2014.

  • As required, take FFI vehicles for PSV inspection for road worthiness and obtain new car and vehicle inspection NTSA stickers.


Etiquette



  • Maintain punctuality.

  • Maintain an appropriate dress code at all times while on duty.

  • Maintain professionalism and be personable.

  • Assist with loading, unloading, packing and transferring any material as requested.

  • Ensure that loading and unloading of the vehicle is carried out in a safe manner, and that the vehicle is not overloaded. All loads must be properly secured.


Other



  • Undertake any other activities that you may, from time-to-time, be asked to perform by the Kenya Country Manager, Finance and Administration Manager, Programme Managers and Technical Specialists, commensurate with your skills and experience.

  • Duties may be altered, reasonably added or delegated from time to time to reflect changes within the organisation’s activities and structure.

Skills:


Essential



  • Proven track record in driving of 4×4 manual vehicles through rough terrain and difficult circumstances

  • Strong time management skills

  • Basic computer skills

  • Excellent record keeping


Qualifications and Language:


Essential



  • ‘O’ level education

  • Valid driving licence – Class B, C, E

  • Excellent written and spoken Swahili and English


Desirable : Government Trade Test Grade 3


Knowledge and experience:


Essential



  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a driver of manual 4×4 vehicles for an organisation

  • Strong knowledge and experience in vehicle maintenance and repair

  • Exemplar and demonstrable knowledge of Kenya traffic laws and code of conduct


Desirable : Experience working with an NGO
