JOB TITLE: Business Development Services (BDS) Coordinator 


REPORTS TO: Business Manager 


REPORTING TO POSTHOLDER: Business Coaches 


LOCATION: Kakuma and Kalobeyei. 


DURATION & HOURS: Full time and fixed period contract, renewable based on  performance and availability of funds 


START TIME: July 2022 or Immediately 


PURPOSE OF THE ROLE


Farm Africa has bided for a programme that seeks to strengthen economic opportunities for  Refugee led small scale enterprises in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. The project will provide refugee  entrepreneurs with a grant that combines financing and BDS access to micro and small  enterprises selected through a business innovation competition. The grant will be  accompanied by Business development support that will entail tailored mentorship and  coaching, capacity building and market linkages to ensure that businesses have the right  expertise and support to generate revenue and jobs in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. 


Farm Africa is therefore seeking to recruit an experienced Business development service  (BDS) coordinator. The BDS coordinator will be based in Kakuma to oversee all project  activities in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. The staff shall be experienced in working with refugee led businesses and have local knowledge of the refugee-led enterprises and strong networks  with local actors in the region including the county government, Humanitarian organisations  including UNHCR and local NGOs’. The staff should also be experienced in similar  programmes that combine grant and BDS provision for small scale enterprises. 


Duties: 


Lead in the identification of viable businesses to participate in the innovation fund through various strategies and facilitating information sessions for MSE’s in the area. This will  include leveraging existing contacts with development organisations working with  refugees’ enterprises in the region, financial institutions and membership organisations in  the region to ensure that the call for applications reaches out to both refugee-led and local led enterprises, and achieves the target of 70% refugee-led and 30% local-led enterprises.  


Lead in conducting verification and due diligence on all Micro and Small Enterprises  selected to participate in the Innovation Fund using the Farm Africa existing due diligence  tools. 


Facilitate the BDS priority needs assessment that will identify the critical needs of the  enterprises through conducting an enterprise capacity assessment for each target  enterprise utilising the Farm Africa developed Enterprise Capacity Assessment Tool  (ECAT). 


Coordinate the development of tailor-made BDS delivery modules for the medium-small enterprises in the region from the results of the enterprise capacity assessment tool  (ECAT) and desk review of the business environment. 


Lead in the recruitment and supervision of local business coaches who will be engaged to  provide coaching and mentorship of the identified businesses. 


Lead in the provision of BDS and mentorship to the identified businesses together with the  Business coaches. 


Monitor the innovation funds disbursement and usage through milestones contracting,  results-based financing and joint procurement to ensure that the funds are utilised  prudently by the businesses and the expected impact is realised. 


Provide support on monitoring the small businesses through fund level reporting,  business-level reporting and development of monthly reports on the progress of the project  including the business identification and recruitment, funds disbursement and utilisation.  


Work with the Farm Africa MEL team to develop the monitoring, evaluation and learning  (MEL) frameworks and tools including a Linear Log Frame (LLF) and a Monitoring and  Learning Plan (MLP) as the foundation of the project’s monitoring and evaluation  framework.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential  Desirable 
Education, qualifications & other knowledge
Degree or relevant field either, economics,  business management, finance, accounting  or any other relevant degree. Knowledge of the business sector in Kenya and specifically in Turkana County..
   
Experience
Minimum of 4 years’ experience working  with medium and small businesses in the  Kakuma and Kalobeyei context in Kenya. Demonstrated success in implementing  commercial focussed business 

 


development programmes aimed at  increasing competitiveness and  


inclusiveness of refugee led small  


businesses in Kakuma and Kalobeyei.


Demonstrated experience of training,  coaching and mentorship of small  

 


businesses, TOTs and development of  capacity building plans.


Experience in the delivery of BDS to small  and growing businesses in Kenya and  specifically in Turkana County. 
Existing networks with key stakeholders in  including NGO’s, County Government,  humanitarian support organisations,  financial institutions and key stakeholders in  the small businesses sector in Kakuma and  Kalobeyei.  Well versed with strategies for network  development and expansion.
Skills & abilities
Demonstrable ability to develop and  maintain positive relationships with  professional contacts. Demonstrated creativity, willingness to  innovate, think systemically and design  catalytic resources and training activities to  drive progressive engagement with partners.
A focused, commercial outlook and an  appreciation of the realities that people face  Excellent presentation skills – able to design  and deliver innovative training materials 

 

















when owning and running a small rural  business and communications confidently and  effectively to a wide range of stakeholders.
Ability to manage and work constructively in  a team.  
Excellent command of English, Kiswahili and at least one local language (Somali,  Arabic or Turkana)
