The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer I – Gender (and youth) in the Environment to support the design, coordination and implementation of gender and youth components of projects that focus on livestock systems, participatory rangeland management and climate related issues.


ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centres dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa. www.ilri.org


Responsibilities



  • Supported by the ILRI gender team and Sustainable Livestock Systems, the person will support the design, coordination and implementation of gender and youth components of projects that focus on livestock systems, participatory rangeland management and climate related issues.

  • Coordinate, implement and manage data collection and fieldwork

  • Assist in the development of research instruments to collect gender and youth data

  • Conduct research analysis of qualitative and/or quantitative social data

  • Contribute to writing of scientific publications and outputs that include tools, policy briefs and documents for a wider audience


Qualifications



  • MSc in social science (geography, anthropology, sociology, or other related field) with an emphasis on gender and/or youth

  • Three years experience in gender research

  • Prior experience collecting and analysing gender related data

  • Prior experience managing field teams preferred

  • Familiarity with gender and livestock system issues and challenges in East African contexts; knowledge of youth issues is preferred

  • Good analytical skills – either qualitative or quantitative, both preferred

  • Capacity to work independently

  • Very good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work effectively in teams and with partners from diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and scientific disciplines 

  • Strong English skills, written and spoken, knowledge of local languages a bonus

  • Willingness to travel, often to rural areas to supervise and manage fieldwork


Post location: The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya


Terms of Appointment


This position is at job level HG 13 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position is a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes; pension, medical and other insurances
