Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), a State Corporation under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives, State Department for Fisheries, Aquaculture and the Blue Economy was established by an Act of parliament (The Science and Technology Act Cap. 250 of the Laws of Kenya of 1979) which has since been repealed by The Science, Technology and Innovation Act No.28 of 2013.


KMFRI’s mandate is to undertake research in “marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, and marine research including chemical and physical oceanography”, in order to provide scientific data and information for sustainable development of the Blue Economy. The Institute is also mandated to cooperate with other organizations and institutions of higher learning in training programmes and on matters of relevant research.


The Institute has Research Centers and Stations located at Mombasa, Kisumu, Naivasha, Baringo, Kegati, Sangoro, Sagana, Shimoni, Turkana, a research substation at Gazi and the Nairobi liaison office.


KMFRI is seeking to recruit self-motivated professionals who are team players to fill the following vacant positions within her approved staff establishment:


KMF/9.  LABORATORY ANALYST INSTRUMENTATION (KMFRI GRADE 7) –  POSITION – ONE (1) 


Basic Salary Scale: KShs. 61,394 – KShs. 79,812 P.M.
House Allowance: KShs. 28,000 P.M.
Commuter Allowance: KShs 6,000 P.M.
Annual Leave Allowance: KShs 6,000 P.A.
Medical Cover & Other Allowances: As provided by KMFRI
Terms of Service: Permanent & Pensionable
 


The laboratory analysts shall be deployed in any of the following research areas: Oceans and Coastal Systems & Blue Economy, Freshwater Systems, Aquaculture and Socioeconomics research areas. 


Responsibilities



  • Develop Technical specifications for new Laboratory equipment to bridge instrumentation gaps

  • Conducting routine diagnostic and maintenance measures to the existing laboratory equipment

  • Prepare annual work plan for scheduled maintenance, calibration and servicing of Laboratory equipment according to manufacturer’s manual.

  • Maintain an up-to-date equipment inventory and initiate appropriate disposal of redundant equipment

  • Ensure Electrical and mechanical safety of all bench top installations by arranging for provision of necessary infrastructure.

  • Read, understand and interpret schematics, ladder drawings, technical specifications and manufacture’s manuals related to repair, maintenance and troubleshooting of electrical instrumentation and control equipment.

  • Test, calibrate, install, maintain, repair and troubleshoot electrical systems including, but not limited to: generators, PLC’s, electric motors, motor controls, flow equipment, alarm and telemetry systems, heating and exhaust systems, conduits, cable and relays.

  • Evaluate instrument performance to identify optimization and enhancement of opportunities

  • Deployment and retrieval of Oceanographic / Limnology equipment


Qualifications



  • Relevant work experience in an equivalent position in the public or private sector

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ and above.

  • Degree from a recognized institution or its equivalent in the following fields; Electrical and electronics engineering or Instrumentation and control engineering or automation and or mechatronic engineering

  • Proficiency in computer application; and

  • Meets the requirements of chapter six of the constitution
