Job Title: Strategy Consultant and Country Director

Location: Nairobi (Missions to other locations in Kenya, as well as to other countries in East Africa, especially Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda, and occasionally to Germany, are common)


 


Our client is a German NGO that promotes microfinance sector development.


 


For their new office in Nairobi, they are looking for a Strategy Consultant who, with 20% of her/his time, will be Country Director for the small team that builds the office.


 


Responsibilities:


 



  • Implement and develop the program of SBFIC in Kenya together with stakeholders in the microfinance sector and ensure the achievement of the joint objectives

  • Support the management and teams of the partner organizations (microfinance associations and microfinance academy) in their institutional development. This includes among others: develop and implement strategy and business plans, change management, HR- and procedures advisory

  • Budget management and reporting in accordance with established procedures

  • Control the achievement of the agreed project goals and ensure the quality of the implemented measures through continuous monitoring and evaluation

  • Effective, cooperative and appropriate staff recruitment, induction, management, supervision, appraisal, remuneration and development practice at all levels in collaboration with the SBFIC East Africa Human Resources Department

  • Work closely with all team members, particularly with the German Coordinator

  • Ensure that SBFIC operates within the legal framework of the Republic of Kenya, and in accordance with any contractual agreements signed within this framework

  • Establish, develop and maintain excellent working relationships with:


 



  1. Government authorities; particularly those relevant for the financial sector development;

  2. Key donors. Actively develop local and international funding sources appropriate to SBFIC’s resource needs;

  3. National and international partners and stakeholders in the microfinance sector or related sectors;

  4. National media. Ensure media coverage accurately reflects the views of the organization, in collaboration with the PR department of SBFIC East Africa


 



  • Develop and maintain appropriate contingency plans for all kinds of emergencies in accordance with general organizational structures and procedures of SBFIC East Africa

  • Other responsibilities and support to the management, as agreed with the Regional Coordinators East Africa


 


Qualifications


 



  • Master’s degree in finance, economics, business administration, or a related subject

  • At least 5 years’ working experience in financial institutions, preferably in the microfinance sector

  • At least 3 years’ experience in leadership/management positions

  • Experience in project management, organizational development, strategic planning and business model implementation

  • Proven management skills, while taking a “hands on” implementation approach when needed, especially in a small organization

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills; very good communication and negotiation skills

  • Excellent organizational skills, with a strong sense for prioritization

  • Flexibility and ability to work on multiple tasks and under pressure

  • Ability to use considerable judgment, initiative and independence

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Very good presentation skills

  • Fluency in English and Swahili (written and oral). Good French and German skills are a plus

  • Excellent MS Office Suite mastery

  • Driving license
