The position is responsible for managing the Environment/Waste Management Project. This includes planning, directing and coordination of operations of the project to ensure actualization of its deliverables in line with donor agreements, budgets and timelines.

Job Description


Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HiH EA) is a registered Non-Government Organization (NGO)in Kenya with a mandate to operate within the Eastern African region and a member of the Hand in Hand Global Network. Our vision is to empower the society with sustainable enterprises and jobs. HiH EA currently operates 23 branches in Kenya and Tanzania.


HiH EA seeks to fill the following vacancy and invites applications from suitably qualified individuals who will undergo a selection process to identify the suitable candidate for the position.


PROJECT MANAGER- ENVIRONMENTALIST HEA PRJ 01-2019 


Duties and Responsibilities



  1. Facilitate implementation and support periodic review of operations plans, work plans, activities and deliverables and performance guidelines for the project. 

  2. Support preparation and use of the budgets, and monitor and control budgets for the project and implementing branches.  

  3. Ensure prudent management of financial and material resources allocated to the project and implementing branches.

  4. Lead the design of the Environment/Waste Management Project and implementation of its activities including the preparation of work plans and performance guidelines.  

  5. Strengthen HiH EA’s institutional knowledge and profile in response to responsible waste management practices through dissemination of research and best practices. 

  6. Support the creation of linkages and partnerships with relevant national institutions and international institutions to facilitate the channelling of cutting-edge practical expertise to the members.

  7. Support the revision of HiH EA’s training manuals to accommodate new methodologies, processes, technologies and the solid M&E frameworks on waste management, environmental conservation and climate resilient practices and participate in scheduled training. 

  8. Facilitate planning and development of a sustainable waste management projects and the education of community members on their rights and responsibilities in regards to waste management and its impact on environmental degradation.  

  9. Co-ordinate activities for meeting and engaging with local leaders and stakeholders in the respective areas of Environment/Waste Management Project operation. 

  10. Provide oversight in management and operations of assigned branches to achieve intended projects outcomes and impacts. This includes regular field visits to support operations of the project. 

  11. Ensure the project complies with legal and donor requirements, organisation’s policies and procedures, and maintain established quality standards. 

  12. Assist Community Based Organizations participating in the project to acquire environmental certification. 

  13. Conduct internal evaluations, disseminate learning and best practices to ensure that HiH EA’s projects are being successfully implemented and generate positive results and impact.  

  14. Spearhead adoption of monitoring and evaluation finding and recommendations for the project including disseminating learning and best practices to ensure the project is being successfully implemented and generate positive results and impact. 

  15. Maintain mutually beneficial communications and relations with respective project donors and 

  16. Offer leadership to the staff and foster teamwork and address and resolve conflicts/ issues affecting the team in a timely manner. 

  17. Ensure effective supervision of staff including support to recruitment, coaching and mentoring, performance management, and timely handling of grievance and disciplinary issues.


Job Specifications



  • A Bachelor of Science degree in any of the following disciplines: Environmental Science, Ecological Science, Environmental Conservation or any related discipline. 

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a similar position. 

  • Training in monitoring and evaluation will be an added advantage.

  • Demonstrable experience in project management and proven track-record of conducting research, mapping, reporting and analysis.  

  • Experience within a similar position or in promoting responsible waste management environmental conservation, climate change adaptation/mitigation. 

  • Track record of practical success in capacity building and knowledge sharing with communities to take up new techniques and practices in waste management. 

  • Demonstrated good leadership, management and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to build and nurture partnership, and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds especially at the community level.

  • Good analytical skills with conceptual and practical understanding of peri-urban and rural development and experience in working with marginalized communities in such environment. 

  • Strong communication both oral and written in English and Kiswahili and report writing skills

  • Strong performance drive, initiative and commitment to individual and team results. 

  • Positive attitude and high level of integrity to be able to handle assets, cash and cash related transactions.
