Role Profile





The overall objective of this position is to contribute to the sustainable management of biodiversity in Kenya by engaging communities in our focal landscape (the Tsavo Conservation Area) in positive conservation actions. This includes developing collaborative methods to help sustainably manage natural resources and protect against poaching and other illegal activities impacting Tsavo communities. The aim of ZSL’s interventions are to improve community attitudes towards conservation and the National Park and ensure target communities are engaged and supportive of the National Park.


 


The post will be based in Mtito Andei and will spend long periods based at field sites in communities around Tsavo West National Park, with additional national travel as required.





 


Main Duties and Responsibilities





The core responsibilities of this post holder include:



  • Work to implement ZSL’s programme of work to engage and empower local communities.

  • Design and implement appropriate socio-economic surveys to guide project activities and monitor and evaluate project outcomes.

  • Train and provide ongoing support to partner communities to strengthen business skills, including book- keeping, business planning, market actor engagement, negotiation etc.

  • Identify and engage key market actors for HWC resilient products, understanding their objectives, hooks and potential opportunities for collaboration

  • Build capacity of key market actors in HWC resilient products to engage with community producers

  • Bring community producers and key market actors together in connections meetings and facilitate the identification and resolution of bottle necks in the value chains.





Person Specification






  • Degree in community development, rural development, agriculture, business or other related fields.

  • Minimum two years’ experience supporting rural communities to develop successful business enterprises.

  • Experience working with market actors within rural agricultural and livestock value chains (i.e., input providers, producers, traders, wholesalers, consumers) to improve the efficiency of the value chain.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and facilitating technical trainings to rural communities in business skills, incl. book-keeping, business planning, negotiations skills.



  • Demonstrated experience working within rural communities in agricultural/livestock related livelihoods activities.

  • Competent MS Office ability, including Word and Excel

  • Valid driving licence
