Research Officer

JOB SUMMARY

The Research Officer will be responsible for providing professional expertise and skills in research methodology, research design, data collection, data analysis, and the interpretation and presentation of research and evaluation results to support KELIN in achieving its Research strategic goals. The Research Officer will also have the opportunity to take a significant lead in the development, management and reporting of KELIN approved research projects as agreed with the Research Monitoring & Evaluation Advisor.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Research Monitoring & Evaluation Advisor, and based in Nairobi, duties and responsibilities of the Research Officer role will include but not be limited to;
•    Research: Take a lead on the development, resourcing, implementation and completion of Research. Take a lead on the development, resourcing, implementation and completion of research and evaluation that meets the organization’s Research operations plan and strategic plan. Conduct data collection and data management; supervise Research Houses and consultants on tasks specific to any given research project, including advanced data analysis and interpretation; and reporting of results. Learn and apply behavioral coding skills; screening, assessment and interviewing skills; and therapeutic interventions skills specific to a research project. Deliver training and support to staff in these skills, and monitoring and measuring research intervention quality and fidelity. Interpret research findings within the broader body of published literature, and provide practical recommendations that benefit client and organizational outcomes, giving consideration to principles of implementation science. Develop a thorough understanding of relevant research areas using a variety of methods (e.g. library materials, Internet databases, discussion with subject matter experts, attending training and professional development). Translate existing theoretical literature and empirical data into literature reviews, summary of the evidence, and organizational briefs. This could include reviews that inform the design of new research, models of practice and/or practice improvements
•    Writing, Presenting and Dissemination: Based on research and evaluation data, and taking into consideration what is already published on the subject matter, take a lead in writing journal publications and organizational reports. Deliver presentations at conferences, workshops and organization venues. Form and maintain collaborations with Universities and other researchers and stakeholders to support organization endorsed research.
•    Data Management: Maintain research and evaluation documentation, literature, forms, data and databases in a manner that is secure (especially where data is confidential), and conducive to the efficient retrieval and revision of content. Ensure that research data is managed, stored, and destroyed in compliance with the requirements of data management legal, regulatory and standards.
•    Project Management: Manage research and evaluation projects - including design, planning, monitoring and regular, timely reporting on progress to all relevant stakeholders. Follow best practice research management protocols, KELIN procedures and the stipulated Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research. Supervise Research teams on tasks specific to each designated research project. Consult and Collaborate with key stakeholders (both internally and externally) as required. Collaborate on time sensitive requests for research inputs (e.g., tender submissions). Contribute to the development of a research ethos throughout KELIN via a range of methods (e.g., maintaining research Intranet page, writing brief reports, staff communications, developing and presenting research-oriented training events, etc. Work collaboratively with other teams in the organization to facilitate and operationalize agreed upon programs of work (e.g., client outcomes measurement, quality assurance). Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, standards and practices.
•    Administrative: Prepare, present and submit quality and timely weekly plans, quarterly and annual reports of the work relating to Research work. Coordinate and participate in weekly, quarterly and annual planning meetings as organized.
•    Any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Programme Manager - H&G from time to time.

EDUCATION SKILLS & COMPETENCIES DESIRED
•    Bachelor’s Degree in Research, Economics, Finance, Commerce or any other relevant field;
    At least five (5) years of work experience handling research projects for national/international NGOs/UN bodies/ Government;
●    Experience in designing tools and strategies for data collection, analysis and production of reports;
●    Proven skills in data collection and analysis, statistical computer software programming, qualitative data research, quantitative data sets and project management;
●    Experience in supervising teams, including remote management of team members in different locations;
●    Good verbal and written communication skills, including ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to a non-technical audience through presentations and written deliverables;
●    Ability to travel to sometimes challenging and remote locations;
●    Ability to develop innovative solutions to complicated process issues;
●    A collaborative  working style and a strong service delivery orientation;
●    High level of integrity, confidentiality, trust and dependability with a strong sense of urgency;
●    Results-oriented, entrepreneurial, self-motivated, self-starter, who is flexible and adaptable to rapid change and has the ability to work in a fast-paced, high demand environment;
●    Strong consultative and influencing skills with the ability to build strong working relationships across all levels;
●    Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with a good focus on organization, and enhanced multitasking abilities;
●    Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and statistical analysis software;
●    Influential within the Research sphere with the ability to bring together stakeholders.
