Job Vacancy: School Nurse and Counselor (Kindergarten & Primary)

Location: South B, off Mombasa road, Nairobi

Report to: Head Teacher

Job Summary: Provide health services to students when they are at school – treat injuries and mild to acute sickness, or support students with chronic illnesses.

Help with preventive care by educating students on how to avoid communicable diseases and having proper hygiene.

Additionally work as School Counselor to develop and implement a counseling program to assist students in their personal, social and academic development.

Duties and Responsibilities

School Nurse

• Provide basic healthcare to students in case of injury or acute illness


• Develop health plans for students with chronic illnesses and disabilities


• Provide emergency treatment in the school.


• Create a clean, and comfortable sickbay area.


• Document students’ injury and illness and keep this information confidential.


• Educate students and staff on healthy habits, such as proper nutrition and hygiene


• Keep track of students’ vaccination records


• Ensure school environment is safe for children and school staff (e.g. prevention of communicable diseases)


• Ensure compliance with government health laws


• Promote healthy eating and wellness programs.


• Communicate with management on a regular basis.

School Counselor

• Listen to students’ concerns regarding social, academic, or personal circumstances.


• Provide students with support and guidance on how to deal with problems.


• Mediate and improve relationships between students, parents, and teachers.


• Counsel individuals and groups as required.


• Conducte assessments to determine students’ strengths, weaknesses, interests, and aptitudes.


• Work with students to develop and improve their skill set.


• Refer students to other support services and mental health professionals as needed.

Key Skills and Competencies:

• Nursing school degree


• Diploma/Certificate or training in counseling


• Working experience as a school or a regular nurse.


• 2+ years of experience as a School Counselor.


• Knowledge in basic Occupational Health and Safety.


• Working knowledge of counseling models, methods, and resources.


• Ability to identify and respond to students’ needs.


• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.


• Excellent listening and problem-solving skills.


• Warm, caring, patient and compassionate disposition


• High level of integrity.


• Critical-thinking skills.
