Job Description: Neurodevelopmental Assessor


Objective of this Position: The Kenya Pediatric Studies (KPS) Team is a collaborative group of investigators at University of Nairobi and the University of Washington leading research projects focused on child health, growth and development.


We are recruiting up to two individuals to join our team, and be trained in the conduct and analysis of neurodevelopmental assessments in children.


The ideal candidate will have a minimum Bachelor’s degree in psychology, be interested in growing both clinical and analytic skills, enjoy working as part of an interdisciplinary team, and be committed to improving child health.


Position Details



  • Work schedule: Full-time (40 hours per week), Monday through Friday.

  • Location: Position will be based at the study office in Nairobi, Kenya, with visits to the clinic (Mathare North Health Centre) and KPS Office as needed.

  • Contract Duration: One year with opportunity for extension.


Key Responsibilities and Tasks



  • To learn to perform a battery of child neurodevelopmental assessments in a research environment.

  • To administer the neurodevelopmental assessments for pre-school motor, language, cognitive and self-regulation skills using one or more of the following tools: Maintain study participant confidentiality.

    • Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children

    • Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development

    • EF-Touch

    • Caregiver self-report instruments

    • Other similar instruments as needed




  • Respectfully and effectively interact with a diverse population of caregivers to administer the developmental assessments

  • Participate in calibration/quality assessment and quality improvement processes through video peer reviews of assessments during the training and research period.

  • Review test forms for accuracy, completeness, and errors in real time

  • Participate in training and quality control activities with other assessors within a collaborative group of study teams conducting similar assessments, and support assessments as needed.

  • Communicate on a regular basis with study team members based in USA (Seattle and Washington) via email, text, and zoom.

  • Assist with video recording testing for quality control and manage video files

  • Assist with data entry and manage data collection forms

  • Assist with data analysis and interpretation

  • Assist with visit scheduling and referrals

  • Assist with any study implementation tasks for the LINDA KIZAZI team

  • Any other duties assigned by the Principal investigators.


Desired Qualifications


Education and Skills



  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution with coursework in Psychology, major in Psychology is desired

  • Computer literacy

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Excellent demonstrated organizational skills

  • Interest in child development

  • Fluency in Kiswahili


Desired work experience and skills



  • Experience working with small children or demonstrated interest in child development or working with small children.

  • Experience conducting neurodevelopmental assessments.

  • Strong rapport with small children.


Compensation will be commensurate with experience and skills.


Employment will commence with a 3-month probationary contract.


Contract renewal will depend on successfully mastering neurodevelopmental assessments within this timeframe. Health insurance will be provided following contract renewal.
