Job Title: Systems / Network Engineer

Job Purpose / Summary: The Systems Engineer, who is part of the Systems Engineering Team, will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of all Wananchi Group Systems and Network.

These include the BSS/OSS provisioning systems, Domain Name Systems (DNS), DHCP management systems, Conditional Access Systems (CAS), email systems, web servers, authentication systems, network monitoring systems, Firewalls and Routers etc.

The Systems Engineer will ensure that systems Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and metrics are measured and met at all times.

Key Roles:

• LAN/WAN maintenance through right configurations


• Network security. Apply right configuration at the firewall and router levels to ensure that the
  network is fully secure


• Carry out continuous penetration tests and simulations using different parameters to ascertain
  there are no unauthorized access.


• Develop or adapt existing software for use in various systems and products within the business
  using java and other open-source scripting tools like UNIX/Linux shell scripting and php.


• Installation, configuration, customization and administer UNIX/Linux based e-Mail servers, DNS,
  Database servers, caching servers and network monitoring systems.


• Operations, maintenance, upgrades and administration of the subscriber management, billing and
  provisioning systems (BSS/OSS); conditional access systems for HFC, GPON and DTH
  infrastructure; mail systems; monitoring systems; DNS systems; and authentication systems used
  to control access to various systems.


• Administration of database management systems – Oracle, PostgresSQL, MySQL, Firebird and
  MS-SQL


• Operations and maintenance of the back end-provisioning systems for HFC and GPON network


• Planning and implementation of systems upgrades to keep up with technological
  advancements/enhancements


• Responsible for ensuring backup systems are in place and working (includes design,
  implementation and testing of backup system and data integrity)


• Creation, operations and maintenance of monitoring systems, to ensure prompt and factual
  reporting of network and systems KPIs and metrics


• Responsible for systems security and integrity


• Generation and analysis of reports from the various monitoring systems


• Development and documentation of Systems disaster recovery plan; process documentation and
  periodic testing


• Proactive monitoring of network and systems vital parameters


• Research, development and implementation of new systems technologies


• Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology / Computer Science or Engineering qualifications.


• At least 5 years’ experience in systems administration at a busy telecom environment


• Prior experience with BSS/OSS systems in a telecom environment


• Proven working experience in installing, configuring and troubleshooting UNIX /Linux based
  environments.


• Solid networking knowledge (OSI network layers, TCP/IP)


• Proven experience in installing, configuring Cisco, Paltoalto and Juniper network devices i.e.
  switches, firewall and Routers


• Solid understanding of programming logic, knowledge and experience in at least one


• In-depth experience of database management systems such as Oracle, PostgresSQL, MySQL,
  Firebird and MS-SQL


• Solid scripting skills (e.g., shell scripts, Perl, Ruby, Python)


• Experience with virtualization (e.g., VMware, Virtual Box)
