Kitui County is located 170Km to the South East of Nairobi City. It covers an area of about 30,496 km2. It borders Machakos and Makueni Counties to the West, Tana River County to the East, Taita-Taveta County to the South, and Embu and Tharaka- Nithi Counties to the North. it is about two and half hours’ drive from Nairobi and 30 minutes flight by a chopper. Population: 1,147,200 Female: 602,002 Male: 545,195 Growth Rate: 2.1% The Kitui Vision for Economic and Social Transformation Following its mandate as a County, The County Government of Kitui developed this long-term development blue print, “Kitui Vision for economic and social transformation” aimed at guiding its economic and social development for the next ten years up to the year 2025. The envisaged County long-term development blue print covers the economic and investment zones which were endorsed by stakeholders in November 2013.

Requirements for Appointment

For appointment to this grade, an officer must have;

1. Served in the grade of Assistant Director – Environment for a minimum period of three (3) years;


2. Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines:- Environmental Science and Management, Aquatic Science, Natural Resources Management, Forestry, Geospatial Information and Remote Sensing, Bio-Diverse Systems Engineering, Water Resources Management, Agriculture or its equivalent from a recognized institution;


3. Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines:- Environmental Economics, Natural Resource Management, Aquatic Sciences, Environmental Education, Zoology, Health, Chemistry, Agriculture, Land and Water Management and any other related field from a recognized institution will be an added advantage;


4. Certificate in Strategic Leadership Development Programme lasting not less than six (6) weeks from a recognized institution;


5. Certificate in computer applications skills from a recognized institution;


6. Demonstrated merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results; and


7. Be a member of a professional body in good standing (lead expert with NEMA, lead expert registered with Environmental Institute of Kenya (EIK).

Duties and responsibilities will involve:

Duties and responsibilities at this level will include:

1. Implementation of the strategic plan;


2. Coordinate the setting of performance targets;


3. Handling technical, administrative, human resource, budgetary and asset management;


4. Policy formulation, interpretation and implementation;


5. Negotiation, legislation and domestication of relevant MEAs;


6. Conceptualization, development, implementation and monitoring of environmental and natural projects initiatives and programs;


7. Rehabilitation, restoration and conservation of river basin and other riparian ecosystems.
